HOW DOES MY ACTIVITY
SUPPORT THE SCIENCE?
The Virtual Reef Diver project represents a new approach to monitoring and managing the Great Barrier Reef.
In Phase 1 of the project, you can view contributed images taken on the Reef, and help with data collection through your observations as you classify images.
In Phase 2 of the project, divers and snorkelers will be able to submit underwater images taken on trips to the Great Barrier Reef, which will be made available for everyone to classify online.
Become a citizen scientist and classify underwater images in Virtual Reef Diver and you could win a GoPro Hero 6 camera – allowing you to take all number of amazing shots, including underwater shots of the Great Barrier Reef.

How much work has been done by Virtual Reef Diver citizen scientists?
Did you know that 77% of Australians align their identity with the Great Barrier Reef? It is widely recognised as one of Australia’s most iconic environments, and is one of the most biologically diverse ecosystems on Earth. It also provides a range of ecosystem services including coastline protection from wave exposure, recreational and cultural heritage benefits, as well as economic benefits to the
